Our Story

Story

The British Overseas School was founded, as a non-profit organisation, in 1958. As a primary school for the children of expatriate families, the BOS prospered and established an excellent reputation. Growth of student numbers allowed relocation to purpose built premises in the heart of the Defence Housing Authority; a peaceful Karachi suburb.

In 2000, an amendment to the School’s constitution opened admissions to local families, offering them the opportunity to join international families in enjoying the benefits of a contemporary British education. As a result of this change, the British Overseas School has, in many respects, become an international school; with many a number of nationalities represented at any one time. Nevertheless, it retains an essentially British character.

Our commitment to a British style of education is signaled in our curriculum, which is based on the National Curriculum of England and the GCSE syllabuses of the Edexcel examining board. But, perhaps more importantly, our UK trained teachers infuse the School with British values and attitudes, as well as ensuring that we are up to date with developments in educational policy and best practice.

In 2004, the School extended its provision to include secondary education. In so doing, the British Overseas School became the only school in Karachi to offer a British education from pre-school right through to I/GCSE. Responding to demand, the Secondary School moved into new facilities in 2005.

Today, the BOS is the only school in Pakistan to be accredited as a British School Overseas (BSO) – the UK Government’s kite mark for high quality British education around the world.  Our primary school students flourish in a British school setting; our secondary school students achieve tremendous results in their I/GCSE examinations and all of them benefit from an approach that places personal development at the forefront of everything we do.

Despite its rapid growth and the changes it has undergone, the School remains true to its founding principles and retains the feel of a family school. Our tradition, our ethos and our aims are codified in our vision and mission.
