Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

There are approximately 750 ‘British’ schools in Pakistan; a British style of education is embedded in private sector education here. But the nature of that ‘Britishness’ varies widely.
The British Overseas School shines brightest among that constellation of ‘British’ schools as the only one accredited by the UK Government as a ‘British School Overseas’. This moniker is more than a statement of quality, it is also recognition of our approach to teaching and learning.
That approach is derived in part from the National Curriculum of England and the principles laid down by the UK schools inspectorate, OFSTED, with their emphasis on a contemporary and creative approach. But it is also drawn from the traditions and values of UK independent schools, with their recognition of the overriding importance of achievement based on long-established methods and skills.
At the BOS we seek to combine tradition and modernity in our teaching by finding a balance between content and skills, between exploration and discipline, between creativity and rigour.
Where is this balance to be found? At the point that best serves our students.
Our teaching is geared to ensure that when our students leave us they do so armed with knowledge, which they understand and effectively apply. Therefore, our curriculum blends subject and cross-curricular learning and our teachers employ a wide range of strategies to stimulate academic development.
Our students leave us knowing that their marvelous imaginations are best harnessed with self-control. They leave us aware that there is much to learn and welcome the fact that the learning is never done.
Combinations such as open-mindedness and thoroughness; creativity and discipline; adaptability to context and constancy to values give our students the means with which to flourish in the world beyond the BOS.
