Now, more than ever, we live in a global village. The actions of one country can have far reaching effects on the rest of the world. A level Geography allows you to consider not only the impact of physical phenomenon like earthquakes and volcanoes have on the world, but also how human activity is shaping and changing our world.

Course Requirements

The minimum to start an advanced level course in Geography is a grade C in Geography and English. If you have not studied GCSE Geography you are still welcome to take AS.

Course Description and method of assessment

AS Unit 1 Global Challenges

  • World at Risk which looks at a range of natural hazards, their causes and effects.
  • Going Global which looks at the rapid economic changes happening in the world today and their unequal impact on the people of the world.

AS Unit 2 Geographical Investigations

    Physical topics;
  • Extreme weather which explores the atmospheric processes as well as human behavior that leads to hazardous events.
  • Crowded Coast which looks at human impact on the coastline and how these should be managed.

  • Human topics;
  • Unequal Spaces which looks at the cause and effects of rural inequality and how to manage them.
  • Rebranding places which looks into the variety of regeneration and rebranding strategies used for urban as well as rural environments.

A2 Unit 3 Contested Planet

  • Detailed study of the consumption patterns of world’s finite resources between regions, inequalities and management.

A2 Unit 4 Geographical Research

  • Students will be expected to select one topic from list of six, to study in depth.
  • The topic ranges from physical to human geography.
