Mathematics in Key Stage 4

Mathematics teaching is designed to enable all students to develop mathematical skills and understanding to the limit of their individual capabilities, and also to foster an interest and enthusiasm for mathematics itself. Many of the skills thus acquired can be applied to other areas of the curriculum. One of the principal aims of this course of study is to enable students to use the language of mathematics with assurance and skill.

The students study according to the Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics Specification A (9-1) 4MA1. The course of study lasts for three years starting in Year 9. All students at the BOS are entered for the Higher Tier.

Set 1 in Years 10 and 11 will also be prepared for Edexcel IGCSE Further Pure Mathematics (9-1) 4PM1. This is an extension course designed to stretch the more able and provide excellent preparation for further study of Mathematics beyond IGCSE. Participation in this course is by invitation only.

The examination for both courses consists of

  • Paper 1 duration 2 hours in which the use of a calculator is permitted.
  • Paper 2 duration 2 hours in which the use of a calculator is permitted.

Examinations will be taken at the end of Year 11 for all sets.
